On Monday, May 20th, 2025, CENTREPEACE hosted another session in the RMA Breakfast series, this time focused on applying for ERC Advanced Grants.
These prestigious grants are designed for leading researchers working on breakthrough topics that push the boundaries of knowledge in their fields. The guest speaker was Professor Matthew Rampley from the Faculty of Arts at Masaryk University, who successfully received an ERC Advanced Grant for a project exploring how political discontinuity shapes the development of architecture and art. As a former member of an ERC evaluation panel, Professor Rampley also offered valuable insights into the review process itself.
In his presentation, he shared the structure of his own project and described the preparation process in detail, emphasizing that planning and writing a competitive proposal may take up to a year. According to him, a high-quality proposal must not only offer an original research question but also show how the results can be applied beyond local or regional contexts.
An important message from the event was that rejection is not failure – an unsuccessful application still provides valuable feedback for further research development and can be improved and resubmitted. Professor Rampley also highlighted the importance of institutional support, including mentoring, peer review, and dedicated time for writing.
In the final discussion, participants explored ways to better support researchers in preparing ERC proposals and how to ensure high-quality feedback during the early stages of the proposal development.
