How to write clearly, effectively and with a clear research purpose? This was the focus of the Writing Detox workshop led by Lynn Nygaard from the Peace Research Institute Oslo, who visited Masaryk University in March and gave valuable advice to academics working on their academic texts.

Lynn Nygaard from the renowned Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) visited Masaryk University in the week of 17-21 March. Her work focuses on publishing strategies, promoting academic writing and also gender issues.

The first two days were devoted to a workshop called Writing Detox, which was designed for a smaller group of academics. Participants had the opportunity to bring their work-in-progress texts and work with the tutor and each other to find ways to develop them further and bring them to a successful conclusion.

The first day focused on the theoretical side of academic writing - for example, how to place research in a broader context, how to link an introduction to a conclusion, or how to work with rhetorical issues. Participants also gave each other feedback on their concepts and discussed their research intentions.

The second day was more practical. The aim was to improve the clarity and coherence of texts and to learn how to effectively 'present' research in a way that would engage a wider academic audience. Feedback from the tutor and colleagues helped participants get an idea of what still needed to be fine-tuned before completing the final paper.

The workshop provided space to reflect on their own research as well as practical tools to write more clearly, clearly and confidently.

Academic writing is not just about scientific language - it is a way to share new knowledge and contribute to the development of science.
