Lynn Nygaard from the Peace Research Institute Oslo visited Masaryk University during the week of 17-21 March. She works there as an expert advisor and is professionally involved in academic writing as well as topics related to gender balance in the academic environment.
On Thursday and Friday, the workshop "Writing for Publication in Academic Journals" took place, which was especially aimed at junior researchers and PhD students. The course focused on the main challenges of academic writing, such as the formulation of arguments, the structure of texts and the effective presentation of results. Another important part of the workshop was understanding the process of submitting articles to academic journals and how to deal with feedback from reviewers.
One part of the workshop was dedicated specifically to PhD students who, in addition to academic writing, need to learn other skills that are different from publishing academic texts. Discussions included what is expected of a PhD, how to set realistic goals and how to cope with academic demands.
At the end of the workshop, practical hints and tips for more effective and successful academic writing were presented. Participants were able to put them into practice immediately, which helped them to better understand the most common mistakes and learn effective strategies for publishing in academic journals.
